Your Stories – A MacGyver Glasnost

First I saw MacGyver at the end of 80’s, when Estonia still belonged to Soviet Union, and American movies, especially politicals like MacGyver, were strongly prohibited. Though, there was a Glasnost already and little bit freedom was in the air. Someone smuggled the movies from foreign countries and then tapes were distributed from hand to hand. I was a kid then, but my father’s got this MacGyver- video tape from some friend. This was the first time I saw MacGyver. It was the first season and best of all I remember the scene, where MacGyver’s open the safe using those wine-glasses. There was a dangerous aspect in smuggling those tapes. You could be arrested for owning or only for watching these prohibited movies. And walls had ears at that time. You couldn’t trust anybody. Your neighbour could be KGB denouncer. But, yeah, despite the fact that MacGyver was prohibited in Soviet Union, and despite the risk of being arrested, people still watched MacGyver series and it was a great pleasure to watch MacGyver defeating all those KGB bad guys!!!

After Soviet Union collapsed, I remember watching MacGyver- series on Estonian TV and after moving to Finland 2003. I watched the show on Finland TV. But there was a long pause after that, when I didn’t watched it at all, until December last year, when Finnish TV-channel Nelonen was aired two MacGyver movies: Lost Treasure Of Atlantis and Trail To Doomsday. I watched these movies and had this strong feeling I want to watch all MacGyver episodes again. MacGyver is still running in Finland, but the airing time is at 4 a.m., and since it’s not healthy to be awake at 4 o’clock in the morning, I decided to buy this MacGyver Complete Series DVD-box. I got it by post on 17th January and it’s 15th of February now, and I already watched all the episodes (8 episodes per day or so) and both movies, and I’m on my second round now. Actually, it’s the first time ever I watched MacGyver so closely and so in detail, and, of course, I fell in love and I’m crazy big fan now.

DIY Washing Machine

This is a great idea for making a low-tech clothes washing with nothing more than a bucket, a plunger and some soap suds. Quick and easy to construct and use. This idea has a definite ring of MacGyver to it and would be an excellent idea for camping or vacation trips where you would most likely already be employing a bucket for other uses anyway.

Emergency handlebar supports

I had taken my boys on a ‘biking adventure’ along a riverside cycle track. We were a mile into the ride when my youngest son fell of his bike and somehow loosened the handlebars (they were so wobbly you couldn’t steer). I was on the verge of walking the bikes back to the car, but decided to have a go at fixing them using wooden sticks and strips of plastic torn from the bag that held our packed lunch.

Your Stories – Swiss Army Lock-pick

I just had come home from work, went inside my house, went outside to get the mail, when I came back the door shut itself and got locked, lucky for me, I always carry my Swiss army knife (thanks to Mac). I took out the tweezers and the tooth pick and shoved it inside the keyhole, after a couple of nudges and some luck, I unlocked the door!! I think I still have the picture of when it happened if anyone doesn’t believe me.

Your Stories – MacGyver in India

Greetings from India. I am a 40 years old IT professional. I grew up watching the fabulous MacGyver episodes…though it was not directly shown in Indian Television, we used to watch it through Bangladesh Television in mid ’80s. There was a group of my friends who used to watch the same…we used to carry “Phoenix Foundation” logo in our T-shirts and proud to be a MacGyver fan…Kudos to Lee, Richard, John and all the team members to make this a success.

I follow MacGyver theory in every difficult situation I face and trust me it helps me a lot in my life. After a long time I re-discovered MacGyver by collecting the four seasons of MacGyver which I frequently watch at my home, even my 7 years old son is fond of MacGyver.

Your Stories – Mac in Finland

I’m a 20-year-old fan of MacGyver from Finland and I’ve been a fan since they started showing the re-runs again in April 2012. I remember viewing an episode for the first time back in 2005. Both of my parents watched MacGyver back in the 80’s. If my memory serves me correctly, MacGyver started airing here in Finland for the first time in 1987.

MacGyver has influenced my life greatly – I don’t drink and I don’t smoke anymore because of Mac and many of the other positive stuff he does and lives by.

I’m thinking of getting my first real Swiss Army Knife “Tinker” model in the near future.

They’re currently airing MacGyver in my country and we’re in season 6 right now.
